The Celebration

The members and officers of: Marquette Council No. 72, Hiawatha Council No. 65 & Straits Area Council No. 92, in joint participation with the Grand Council of Michigan are prepared for a gala duel celebration over one weekend in September, at one place, in the number one vacation destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste Marie.

The community is celebrated as the oldest city in Michigan and the third oldest west of the Appalachians in the United States. This is an international city connected by the St. Mary’s River and its Soo Locks with Ontario, Canadian borders. Autumn was chosen as the right time of the year for the celebration. Cool nights, changing of the colors of the foliage and little traffic.

We will offer two (2) spectacular activites, and at a reasonable cost. First, is the “Reception” of the Most Illustrious Grand Master. This function will be unique. An experience you must participate in and with a cultural flavor for entertainment. This Friday evening event will be on September 21, 2007, commencing at 6:00 pm with the reception and dinner.

Saturday, September 22, 2007 begins the Sesquicentennial (150th) Celebration. No celebration for the Council would be complete wiothout the Crypitc Degrees being performed. So it is then, the three degrees will begin at 8:00 A.M. This will be a great opportunity for your candidates to see the best there is to offer, at this special occasion. While we are at work, the Ladies can: shop in town, free shuttle service by the hotel amenities or take in a coffee break with Barbara Seitz in the Hospitality Room.

Following lunch with our ladies on Saturday, an escorted coach will begin our two (2) tours. No trip to the Soo would be complete without a visit through the famous "Soo Locks with a Boat Tour". Then on our return from the Soo Locks, the second tour is only a few steps across the parking lot to the "Valley Camp Ship & Museum". During the Soo locks tour you will experience riding along side the big ships and being raised 21 feet inside the locks. The narrated event is one of the finest attractions in the United States. The Valley Camp is a massive great lakes freighter, which has been renovated into a 100 exhibit and maritime museum. Part of its collection is a exhibit of the "Edmund Fitzgerald" ship and the mystery around its sinking in 1975 in Lake Superior.

You will return by coach to the hotel for the finale of our celebration: a Reception, Banquet, Reconstituting of the Charter and and lastly the exclusive live entertainment on the first floor "Dream Makers Theater" and concluding with our birthday celebration. A real lasting treat to close out our celebration of the 150th year in existence.
